Introduction to IBAN

The International Banking Account Number (IBAN) is an international standard that allows to uniquely identify bank accounts across national borders. Based on the IBAN, it is possible to identify both the country and the bank where the account is maintained.

In Temenos Transact or Standalone TPH, the IBAN module (IN):

  • Manages the IBAN Structure rules for the countries that have adopted the IBANs.
  • It optionally handles the IBAN National Identifiers
  • Provides a set of REST APIs through which the IBAN reference data can be accessed

A set of public methods are available under the System Table (ST) module to access or validate the IBAN-related data against the reference directories.

SWIFT provides the IBAN-related data as part of the following directories:

  • SWIFTRef IBAN Plus – This directory includes the IBAN structure rules for the countries that adopted IBAN, the IBAN National Identifiers used in the countries and their corresponding BIC, and the list of IBAN National Identifiers that cannot be used in Payments. From November 2026 SWIFT discontinues support for this directory, which is replaced by the SWIFT Identifiers All
  • SWIFTRef Identifiers All – This directory includes all the entity identifiers. This includes BIC, LEI, IBAN National IDs, and national IDs which are not used in IBANs.

SWIFTRef IBAN Plus Upload

  • Temenos supports the upload of the SWIFTRef IBAN Plus directory published by SWIFT. The upload processes for the SWIFTRef IBAN Plus files into the Temenos IBAN Structure, IBAN Plus, and Exclusion List are part of the Centralised Reference Data module (RD).
  • Clients upgrading from a release before 201907 who have already licensed Delivery (DE) or IBAN module (IN) in the prior release, can get the RD license code at no additional cost. Before starting the upgrade, the customers should request the license code of the RD module from their account manager.
  • From November 2026, SWIFT discontinues support for this directory. SWIFT clients can upload the SWIFTRef Identifiers All which replaces SWIFT IBAN Plus

SWIFTRef Identifiers Directory

  • Temenos supports the upload of the Identifiers All directory published by SWIFT. The upload of the SWIFTRef Identifiers files is part of the Temenos SWIFTRef Identifiers Directory (SFRD25) module.
  • From R25 clients that have licensed the Centralised Reference Data module (RD) will automatically receive the SFRD25 module
  • Upgrading clients to R25 which have licensed SFRD25, will automatically receive the RD module
  • Based on the configuration of the RD module:
  • The IBAN National IDs can be referred from the IBAN Plus or from the Centralised Bank Directory
  • The upload process can optionally update the IBAN National ID into the IBAN Plus Directory
